Trading Risk Awards 2018

Ten years ago, amid the turmoil of the global financial market crisis, the first Trading Risk awards ceremony was held.

Fast forward to 2018 and you can see that the change that has taken place in the ILS market has created an increasingly varied and versatile industry.

This got me to thinking: one of the things that gets said about ILS is that it’s

destroyed the concept that there’ll ever be another “class of x” reinsurers, as there was in 93 or 2001 or 2005.

But maybe we could see the ILS market as a whole as the “class of 2008”.

The financial crisis may have caused some challenges in the interim and a temporary slowdown. But it set the scene for the huge influx of capital that started coming into the sector a few years later.

Meanwhile, at Trading Risk as we looked forward to the 10th anniversary edition of the awards ceremony, we felt it was time for a revamp.

Our New York venue proved tremendously popular, while competition remained hot despite the addition of new award categories to this year’s line up.

We also brought on some new judges who contributed to a spirited debate over the merits of this year’s entries.

Thanks to our external judges: Adam Alvarez, Trevor Bolt, Simon Cloney, Steve Evans, Morton Lane and Jay Nichols.

As ever, there were some very tightly-fought categories and the range of achievement is all the more impressive given the notable challenges that all participants in the industry were facing last year.

Congratulations to all the 2018 winners!
