Elsa became the first hurricane of the season early on Friday as it slashed Barbados with winds gusting up to 86 mph.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and high winds to the Caribbean this weekend, but the National Hurricane Center said the forecast for early next week, when it’s expected to reach Florida, is more uncertain than usual.
