Quad-state tornadoes devastate Kentucky, ‘likely first EF5’ in eight years: BMS’s Siffert

The deadly tornado that devastated Mayfield, Kentucky along with three other states in the surrounding region and has so far cost at least 70 lives was likely the first EF5-rated tornado to strike the US in eight years, according to BMS meteorologist Andy Siffert.

Siffert said that while it is “extremely early” in the process of rating the tornadoes that touched down on Friday, early indications pointed to wind speeds in some cases above 200 mph, which would meet the EF5 criteria.
