WR Berkley builds ~$50mn stake in Axis Capital

WR Berkley has built a position in Axis Capital through the purchase of 862,836 shares, or around 1% of the carrier’s total shares outstanding, worth nearly $50mn at the end of Q2, according to regulatory filings.

The specialty insurer acquired the interest in Axis as the Bermudian pivots away from reinsurance, through a strategy that included a failed attempt to sell its ~$3bn-premium reinsurance unit.
