European retentions should have risen 22% since 2017: JP Morgan

Retentions on European property cat treaties would have risen by 22% in the past five years if they had kept pace with inflation, but many have remained static, according to a JP Morgan report.

Analyst Kamran Hossain said the structure of programmes at the 1 January 2023 renewal will be as important as price for the profitability of reinsurers’ portfolios, echoing Insurance Insider analysis which highlighted retentions as a key negotiating point.
