US retro capacity down 25% but lower Ian trapping eases renewal: Gallagher Re

Retro capacity was materially constrained, with US supply dropping more than 25% year on year amid a highly challenged ILS fundraising environment in the run-up to the 1 January renewals, Gallagher Re said.

It said lower Hurricane Ian loss estimates had eased some concerns over trapped capital and helped to provide “much needed additional liquidity” for retrocession buyers in the last few weeks of the renewal.
