An energetic low-pressure system is gathering strength off California’s coast and will make landfall with moderate to heavy rain across much of the state, the US National Weather Service (NWS) warned on Tuesday morning.

The storms will compound the impact of flooding with mudslides and rockslides, caused by heavy rains that began to batter the state last week.
