The Kahramanmaras earthquake sequence that devastated large parts of south-central Turkey and Syria has been the largest international catastrophe insurance loss to date in 2023, with an industry loss of $5bn, according to Cresta.

On the cat-modelling firm's second-quarter update to the Cresta Industry Loss Index (Clix), the Kahramanmaras loss was followed by losses in New Zealand’s North Island January floods at $1.2bn
