Idalia heading towards historically ‘hurricane-lucky’, low population-density area: BMS

As Tropical Storm Idalia heads toward Florida’s Big Bend region between Steinhatchee and Cedar Key – a 60-mile swath of the Sunshine State that’s historically been “hurricane-lucky” – projecting insured losses will be a tricky undertaking, according to broker BMS’s tropical update released on Monday.

According to the NOAA historical hurricane tracks, only 13 hurricanes have made landfall within this radius, and it is even rarer to see a major hurricane in this area, with only two making landfall in the historical record.
